Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled Phantom Hummingbird, a Phantom Extended Private Commission featuring the marque’s first-ever use of abalone shell marquetry in a motor car.
Commissioned as a private tribute to the client’s wife and curated through Private Office Dubai, the Bespoke creation takes inspiration from the hummingbird, a symbol of joy, resilience and the ability to find beauty in every moment.
The design celebrates the intricate beauty of the natural world through the use of abalone shell and mother-of-pearl, chosen for their natural iridescence and ability to reflect changing colours in the light.

Abalone shell brings the hummingbird to life
At the heart of Phantom Hummingbird is the pioneering use of abalone shell, prized for its extraordinary natural iridescence.
The nacreous inner surface of the shell produces a distinctive blue-green lustre as it interacts with light. Combined with mother-of-pearl, the material is used to recreate the shimmering feathers of a hummingbird.
The choice of material reflects the natural way in which a hummingbird’s plumage changes colour. Its vivid hues are created by microscopic structures within the feathers that split and reflect light, producing flashes of colour that shift depending on the viewing angle.
The natural theme extends to the exterior, where a hand-painted hummingbird completes the Coachline.
More than nine months of development
The intricate marquetry is spread across three interior panels, with a hummingbird taking flight on each of the two Picnic Tables and a botanical composition appearing on the Rear Waterfall panel between the rear seats.
Each hummingbird is constructed from 53 individual pieces of abalone shell and mother-of-pearl, including 18 pieces within the wings alone. The botanical motif comprises 84 individual pieces.
Developing the compositions took more than nine months, as Rolls-Royce designers and craftspeople worked to overcome the technical challenges presented by the delicate material.
Abalone shell is unusually fine and brittle, requiring the Bespoke Collective’s designers, engineers and craftspeople to develop a suitable method for cutting, finishing and setting each individual fragment into the veneer.
Six iterations were required before the appropriate technique was established.
Precision down to 0.06mm
The final process begins by reducing the thickness of the pearl and abalone shell before each fragment is carefully set into place and lacquered.
Every piece is laser-cut 0.06mm larger than its final size to accommodate the laser’s burn margin. Each fragment is then filed by hand to achieve its precise final shape.
The edges of each piece are worked individually until they meet their neighbours without visible seams. This level of precision is particularly important for elements such as the hummingbird’s wings, where the craftspeople rely on hand-finishing to achieve the required fit.
Once the pieces have been cut and fitted, each Picnic Table and the Rear Waterfall panel requires a further eight hours to complete.
Across the three panels, the process represents approximately 45 hours of finishing work.
An interior palette inspired by nature
The abalone marquetry is complemented by an interior palette designed to emphasise the natural materials and colours of the composition.
Ash Burr veneer provides the background for all three marquetry panels, while Silver Birch features within the Picnic Table motifs.
The Silver Birch is cut entirely from a single log selected and examined in detail to ensure that its grain pattern complemented the overall design.
The seating is finished in Creme Light leather with Moccasin and Tan detailing, while Seashell carpets and a Starlight Headliner complete the interior suite.
Two-tone exterior continues the theme
The natural-inspired design continues across the exterior of Phantom Hummingbird.
The lower body is finished in Wildberry, contrasted with a White Sands upper body. A hand-applied White Sands Coachline traces the division between the two colours.
A hummingbird appears along the length of the Coachline, creating a visual connection between the exterior and the bespoke interior marquetry.
Through Phantom Hummingbird, Rolls-Royce has combined rare natural materials, painstaking handcraftsmanship and Bespoke automotive design to create a private commission centred on the changing colours and delicate beauty of the hummingbird.
