KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and Alibaba Commerce Services (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (Alibaba.com) have formalised a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Malaysia Halal Pavilion on Alibaba.com, strengthening the global visibility of Malaysian halal products and creating new digital pathways for local business to expand into international markets.

The MoU was signed by Dato’ Indera Abu Bakar Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of MATRADE, and Mr. Roger Luo, Head of South & Southeast Asia Business, Alibaba.com. The exchange symbolised the strategic importance of strengthening Malaysia’s digital trade ecosystem and advancing the global competitiveness of the nation’s halal industry.

MATRADE and Alibaba Aim to Strengthen Export Competitiveness

In an increasingly complex global trade environment characterized by shifting tariff regimes, supply chain dislocations, and heightened cross-border friction, public-private alliances serve as vital instruments to protect national export resilience, and integrate local enterprises into global value chains. Under this strategic collaboration, MATRADEE and Alibaba.com aim to support the MADANI Digital Trade Platform (MDTP) hub as Malaysia’s primary digital export ecosystem, enabling homegrown businesses particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs) within the Halal sector to capture high-growth market opportunities worldwide via participation in cross-border commerce.

The collaboration marks a significant step towards advancing Malaysia’s digital export agenda by connecting the country’s halal industry with global business opportunities through one of the world’s leading business-to-business (B2B) e-Commerce platforms. By combining MATRADE’s export promotion expertise and extensive exporter network with Alibaba.com’s digital commerce capabilities and international buyer reach, the partnership aims to help Malaysian businesses strengthen their competitiveness, expand their market presence and pursue new export opportunities.

Connecting Local Businesses to Global Markets

The establishment of the Malaysia Halal Pavilion will provide a dedicated digital showcase for Malaysian halal-certified products and services, enhancing their discoverability among international buyers and strengthening the global positioning of Malaysia’s halal offerings. As Malaysia continues to expand its export footprint, initiatives such as this will be instrumental in helping local businesses translate digital opportunities into stronger international connections and greater export potential.

Beyond increasing online visibility, the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between Malaysian suppliers and international demand by facilitating buyer engagement, business matching and access to digital trade opportunities. It will also support eligible halal businesses in strengthening their export readiness, navigating market-entry requirements and building the capabilities needed to compete in an increasingly digital global marketplace.

The collaboration combines MATRADE’s statutory trade promotion mandate and institutional exporter network with Alibaba.com’s global B2B e-Commerce infrastructure, buyer reach, and digital trade solutions. This initiative reinforces MATRADE’s commitment to empowering Malaysian exporters to move beyond traditional market access channels and embrace digital platforms as a strategic avenue for international business development.
