Empowering East Malaysian SMEs Through National Recognition
The roadshow serves as a platform to introduce East Malaysian businesses to the values, judging criteria, and nomination process of the Platinum Business Awards. Organisers aim to inspire more ambitious and capable enterprises from Sabah to compete for this prestigious recognition, strengthening their national presence.
SMEs Must Leverage Integration and Collaboration
In his opening address, Dr. Chin Chee Seong, National President of the SME Association of Malaysia, highlighted the strategic strength of SMEs:
“The strength of SMEs comes from their ability to leverage integrated platforms to optimise business resources, create greater value, and foster closer collaboration within the broader business ecosystem.”
He also emphasised the Association’s role in advocating for SMEs, bridging the gap between private sector concerns and government policy, and offering crucial feedback to better shape Malaysia’s SME environment.
Sabah’s Growing Recognition on the National Stage
Dr. Deledda Tan Hui San, President of the SME Association of Sabah, spoke about the award’s 23-year legacy and its recognition by the Malaysia Book of Records in 2023.
“It is worth noting that the Platinum Business Award is not only highly regarded by the corporate sector, but also well-recognised by banks and financial institutions. This creates more business opportunities for SMEs.”
She proudly shared that 10 companies from Sabah were nominated in 2023 and won across 11 award categories, demonstrating the entrepreneurial strength of the state.
“I strongly encourage more SMEs from Sabah to take part. While the application process may be challenging, the credibility, exposure, and business growth opportunities it brings are truly worth the effort.”
A Platform to Celebrate Sustainable Business Excellence
Yeow Wah Fuong, Organising Chairman of the 2025 PBA, announced this year’s theme:
Leadership, Integration, and Sustainability.
“Business success should not be measured solely by revenue figures. Instead, it should reflect strategic alignment, team collaboration, and a holistic commitment to the environment, society, and future generations. That’s the hallmark of a truly sustainable enterprise,” he said.
This year’s edition will feature 21 award categories, covering areas such as:
- Technological innovation
- Social responsibility
- Service excellence
- Corporate culture
The inclusive approach allows businesses of various sizes and sectors to compete and be recognised.
Why Kota Kinabalu? Recognising a High-Potential Market
Yeow Wah Fuong shared that Kota Kinabalu was selected as a stop for the roadshow due to its position as Sabah’s commercial hub and its fast-growing SME ecosystem.
“Through this roadshow, we hope to raise awareness of the Platinum Business Awards among Sabah enterprises and encourage them to leverage this platform to gain the recognition they rightfully deserve,” he added.
