The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has officially launched its MD Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI) in Sarawak, marking a major milestone in its mission to bridge the digital divide and support MSMEs across Malaysia. This is the first rollout of the initiative in East Malaysia.

Part of the MADANI Government’s nationwide digital transformation agenda, the initiative equips micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with essential digital tools, training, and support systems to enhance business productivity, streamline operations, and scale sustainably.

A Unified Push for Inclusive Digital Growth

The initiative is a result of a strategic collaboration between MDEC, the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development (MINTRED) Sarawak.

YB Datuk Wilson Ugak Anak Kumbong, Deputy Minister of Digital, highlighted the importance of supporting Sarawak’s MSMEs through innovation.

“By embracing digitalisation and e-Invoicing, they are positioning themselves for greater efficiency, transparency and global competitiveness.”

He also noted Sarawak’s unique strengths in renewable energy and innovation, saying they provide “a powerful platform” for digital growth.

Empowering Businesses with E-Invoicing and Tailored Digital Solutions

One of the central features of the BDI rollout in Sarawak is the promotion of the National e-Invoicing Initiative, led by the Ministry of Digital and implemented by MDEC. Using the Peppol framework, this initiative aims to standardise digital invoicing across the country – making compliance with LHDNM tax regulations seamless and efficient.

To ease adoption, MDEC has partnered with certified providers including Xero and Big Ledger Sdn Bhd, offering freemium and affordable digital solutions tailored for MSMEs.

Businesses attending the launch also benefited from:

  • Digital advisory clinics
  • Live demos from 404 accredited Digitalisation Partners
  • Access to the Digital Maturity Assessment (DMA) to measure digital readiness

Strong Federal-State Collaboration Key to Success

MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to inclusive digital development:

“This initiative is about building a future-ready business ecosystem, ensuring that no MSME is left behind in the digital economy.”

With Sarawak’s Digital Economy Blueprint 2030 already in motion, this initiative is expected to catalyse deeper cooperation between the federal government and the state in the coming months.
