Malaysia’s halal industry is set to gain greater international visibility as the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and Alibaba Commerce Services (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (Alibaba.com) join forces to create new digital export opportunities for Malaysian businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The strategic collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 19 October 2026, will see the establishment of the Malaysia Halal Pavilion on Alibaba.com, a dedicated digital showcase connecting Malaysian halal-certified products and services with international buyers.
The MoU was signed by Dato’ Indera Abu Bakar Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of MATRADE, and Roger Luo, Head of South & Southeast Asia Business, Alibaba.com. The partnership brings together MATRADE’s export promotion expertise and extensive exporter network with Alibaba.com’s global business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce infrastructure, digital commerce capabilities and international buyer reach.
Bringing Malaysian Halal Businesses Closer to Global Buyers
At the centre of the collaboration is the Malaysia Halal Pavilion, which will provide a dedicated digital platform to showcase Malaysian halal-certified products and services to international buyers. Through Alibaba.com’s B2B e-commerce platform, Malaysian halal businesses will have opportunities to strengthen their online visibility, expand their market presence and pursue new international business connections.
Beyond product visibility, the initiative aims to facilitate buyer engagement, business matching and access to digital trade opportunities. This approach seeks to bridge the gap between Malaysian suppliers and international demand, enabling businesses to explore opportunities in cross-border commerce.
For Malaysian SMEs in the halal sector, the initiative provides another avenue to participate in international markets by leveraging digital trade capabilities and Alibaba.com’s global buyer network. It also reinforces Malaysia’s efforts to position its halal offerings more prominently within the global marketplace.
Beyond Market Access: Building Export Readiness
While increasing international visibility is an important component of the partnership, the collaboration also recognises the need to strengthen the capabilities of Malaysian exporters. The initiative will support eligible halal businesses in enhancing their export readiness, navigating market-entry requirements and developing the capabilities needed to compete in an increasingly digital global marketplace.
This is particularly relevant as international trade continues to evolve, with businesses operating amid shifting tariff regimes, supply chain dislocations and heightened cross-border friction. Against this backdrop, public-private partnerships play an important role in strengthening national export resilience and connecting local enterprises with global value chains.
By combining MATRADE’s institutional exporter network and trade promotion mandate with Alibaba.com’s digital trade solutions, the collaboration aims to help Malaysian businesses become more competitive and pursue international growth opportunities. It also reflects MATRADE’s commitment to supporting exporters in moving beyond traditional market access channels and embracing digital platforms as a strategic avenue for international business development.
Supporting Malaysia’s Digital Export Agenda
The partnership forms part of a broader effort to advance Malaysia’s digital export ecosystem through the MADANI Digital Trade Platform (MDTP) hub. Under the collaboration, MATRADE and Alibaba.com aim to support the MDTP hub as Malaysia’s primary digital export ecosystem, enabling homegrown businesses, particularly SMEs within the halal sector, to capture high-growth market opportunities worldwide through cross-border commerce.
The initiative brings together the complementary strengths of a national trade promotion agency and a global digital commerce platform. MATRADE, established in 1993 as Malaysia’s national trade promotion arm under the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), plays a central role in assisting Malaysian exporters to develop and expand their international markets. Alibaba.com, meanwhile, provides digital solutions covering online sourcing, business matching, digital marketing and international market access.
Strengthening Malaysia’s Global Halal Presence
The establishment of the Malaysia Halal Pavilion marks another development in Malaysia’s efforts to expand its export footprint and strengthen the international positioning of its halal industry. By providing a dedicated digital showcase alongside export readiness support and business-matching opportunities, the partnership aims to help Malaysian businesses translate digital opportunities into stronger international connections. It also highlights the growing role of digital commerce in supporting international business development, particularly as exporters navigate an increasingly complex global trading environment.
