Funding Societies has secured a new working capital financing facility from Malaysia Debt Ventures Berhad (MDV), further strengthening financing access for technology-driven and underserved small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across Malaysia.
The multi-year facility builds on a partnership that began in 2022, when MDV first collaborated with Funding Societies to support technology-based SMEs through its digital financing platform. The latest initiative reflects both organisations’ continued commitment to improving access to capital for businesses while supporting Malaysia’s broader economic and industrial development goals.
Strengthening SME Financing Through Digital Innovation
As a wholly owned subsidiary of the Minister of Finance (Incorporated) [MOF Inc], MDV plays a key role in financing technology-based companies through specialised and flexible funding solutions.
The new facility enables Funding Societies to extend its digital, alternative-data-driven financing to more SMEs at a critical stage of their growth, helping businesses strengthen cash flow, expand operations and move up the value chain.
The initiative also supports the objectives of Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which aims to develop more high-growth, mid-tier companies capable of competing both regionally and globally.
Expanding Access to Capital for Malaysian SMEs
Digital financing continues to play an increasingly important role in improving financial inclusion for SMEs that may face challenges accessing traditional financing.
By leveraging alternative data to assess creditworthiness, digital financing platforms can process applications more efficiently, reduce turnaround times and lower servicing costs compared with conventional lending methods.
This enables financing providers to reach a larger number of underserved businesses while delivering quicker access to working capital.
The need for accessible financing remains significant, with SMEs accounting for 96.1 per cent of all business establishments in Malaysia, contributing close to 39 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and providing approximately half of national employment.
Supporting financing at scale therefore has the potential to generate broader economic benefits by encouraging business expansion, creating employment opportunities and increasing household incomes.
Building on a Strong Financing Track Record
Since its establishment in Malaysia, Funding Societies has disbursed nearly RM7 billion in financing to more than 10,000 businesses, supporting companies across various sectors through its digital financing platform.
Meanwhile, Malaysia Debt Ventures Berhad (MDV) has approved over RM14 billion in financing for more than 1,184 technology projects since its establishment in 2002, helping businesses accelerate innovation and technological development across multiple high-impact industries.
A Long-Term Partnership to Scale SME Growth

Commenting on the new facility, Chai Kien Poon, Country Head of Funding Societies Malaysia, said platform financing creates a multiplier effect by enabling a single financing facility to benefit thousands of businesses rather than individual borrowers one at a time.
He noted that MDV has supported Funding Societies since 2022 and described the latest facility as the next milestone in a long-term partnership focused on delivering development financing at the scale and speed required by Malaysia’s SME economy.

Sharul Sazman Samaan, Chief Business Officer of MDV, said the continued collaboration reflects MDV’s confidence in fintech platforms as an effective way to broaden financing access for technology-based SMEs.
He explained that supporting an established digital financing platform allows MDV to channel development capital more efficiently to businesses with smaller, fast-moving financing requirements, helping more SMEs obtain the funding needed to grow and contribute to Malaysia’s economic development.
Driving Malaysia’s SME Financing Ecosystem Forward
The latest financing facility demonstrates how partnerships between development finance institutions and fintech platforms can strengthen Malaysia’s SME financing ecosystem by combining institutional funding with digital capabilities.
Moving forward, Funding Societies and MDV intend to continue exploring new opportunities to support the financing needs of technology-driven and growth-oriented SMEs, reinforcing their shared commitment to helping Malaysian businesses innovate, scale and remain competitive in an increasingly digital economy.
