Entrepreneurship and storytelling took centre stage at the recent Pitch Perfect – A Business Pitch Clinic. The event brought together entrepreneurs, mentors, and business leaders for an intensive session to help founders craft and deliver powerful business pitches that connect, inspire, and convince. MALAYSIA SME’s Aileen Anthony, who attended the event shares highlights from the afternoon.

Pitch Perfect was jointly organised by the Entrepreneur Speaker Bureau (ESB) and Calibre Communications, two organisations passionate about amplifying entrepreneurs’ voices.

Calibre Communications, founded by Colin Lai Chee Seng, is a strategic content and thought-leadership consultancy that helps founders and business leaders shape their voice, story, and impact. The firm believes in aligning communication with authenticity and purpose—an ethos that underpinned the entire event.

The clinic was supported by MALAYSIA SME, the nation’s leading SME news publisher; Wealthlife Trinity, a trusted name in risk planning; and United Overseas Bank (UOB), which hosted the event as the community partner in its continued effort to drive regional prosperity and nurture entrepreneurial growth.

A Space for Ideas and Courage

In her opening remarks, Lynda Lee set the tone for an afternoon of growth and collaboration. “Today isn’t just another event on the calendar,” she said. “It is a space for ideas to be heard, for stories to be sharpened, and for courageous entrepreneurs to step forward and own their voice.”

Colin Lai followed with a message underscoring the power of clarity and presence in communication, reminding participants that great pitching is equally about connection as it is about perfection.

The event gathered participants from diverse industries, including legal, consulting, and technology. Among the pitching teams were representatives from Daphne Leong & Ellie Law Chambers, Kit Consulting, Fusion QB, and Agentic Friday; each bringing forward distinct ideas and approaches that reflected creativity and drive.

Guide by Mentors

Mentors (L-R): Daryll Tan, Colin Lai, Janet Lee

The clinic featured mentors, each an accomplished leader in their respective fields: Colin Lai of Calibre Communications, who has 30 years of experience in communications, branding, and leadership influence. Daryll Tan, Co-Founder of OpenMinds and digital consultant, known for mentoring startups and advocating for clarity and authenticity in branding, and Janet Lee, Founder and CEO of Ninety Five Per cent, a culture design consultant with deep expertise in organisational culture and leadership transformation.

Together, they offered participants real-time feedback on their three-minute pitches, evaluating them on content and structure, delivery and presence, and audience engagement. The environment was supportive yet challenging, encouraging entrepreneurs to refine their message and presentation under professional guidance.

The Workshop, From Pitching to Mastery

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the Pitching Mastery Workshop, conducted by Colin Lai, who shared frameworks and practical tools to help participants elevate their pitching craft beyond the basics.

The workshop unpacked the anatomy of a compelling pitch, from defining the problem and framing the solution to delivering it with emotional intelligence and authenticity. Participants learned how to balance structure with spontaneity, manage nerves, and adapt their message to different audiences and contexts.

Interactive and experiential, the session included a live pitch demonstration by Dave Leong of AIDave, who showcased how previous pitch sessions have helped him gain confidence in mastering the art.

Influencing New Beginnings

Beyond technical skill-building, the workshop reinforced the event’s deeper purpose, to help entrepreneurs discover their confidence and clarity. The event setup encouraged honest sharing, peer learning, and genuine connection, culminating in an atmosphere of collaboration and most importantly, long-term support and friendship.
