The Malaysia Budget & Business Hotel Association (MyBHA®) has strengthened Malaysia’s regional tourism and hospitality cooperation following a successful trade mission to Bangkok, Thailand, from 14 to 17 July 2026.
The mission aimed to expand cross-border business opportunities, strengthen industry connections and position Malaysian budget and business hotels within the wider regional tourism ecosystem.
The four-day programme brought together strategic engagements across tourism, hospitality, business networking and digital travel. It also supported the objectives of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) by promoting Malaysia as a competitive tourism destination.
MyBHA’s delegation participated in several key activities, including:
- The signing of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Thai tourism organisations
- Participation as Hosted Buyers at MEGA HALAL Bangkok 2026
- Business networking sessions with industry stakeholders
- Courtesy visits to Agoda and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA)
Building Stronger Malaysia–Thailand Tourism Cooperation
MyBHA National President Dr Sri Ganesh Michiel said the trade mission focused on creating long-term partnerships that can benefit Malaysia’s tourism and hospitality sector.
He highlighted that international engagement is essential as the tourism industry becomes increasingly interconnected.
“Tourism today is interconnected. Hotels, travel agencies, technology platforms, wellness providers, trade organisations and international tourism bodies must work together,” he said.
Through stronger regional cooperation, MyBHA aims to create opportunities for tourist arrivals, business growth, investment, knowledge exchange and industry development.
Three Strategic MoUs Strengthen Industry Collaboration
A key milestone of the trade mission was the signing of three strategic MoUs during the Visit Malaysia 2026 Seminar & Networking Session, organised by Tourism Malaysia Bangkok.
The agreements were signed between MyBHA and:
- Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA)
- Thai Medical and Wellness Tourism Association (TMWTA)
- CHG Global Organization (CHG)
The agreements establish a framework for collaboration in areas such as:
- Tourism exchange programmes
- Business and investment opportunities
- Exhibitions and conferences
- Industry research
- Market intelligence sharing
- Promotional initiatives
Additionally, the partnerships will help connect MyBHA member hotels with Thai travel agencies and tourism stakeholders.
Through this collaboration, Malaysian budget and business hotels aim to become preferred accommodation options for Thai leisure and business travellers.
Unlocking Opportunities in Medical, Wellness and Business Tourism
The partnership with TTAA is expected to strengthen Malaysia’s presence in Thailand’s outbound tourism market.
Meanwhile, the collaboration with TMWTA opens opportunities in the growing medical and wellness tourism sector.
Potential areas of cooperation include:
- Integrated tourism packages
- Professional knowledge exchange
- Industry networking
- Cross-border business opportunities
The partnership with CHG Global Organization will also support business cooperation through exhibitions, conferences, investment missions and international networking activities.
Dr Sri Ganesh said the agreements are intended to create practical opportunities rather than symbolic partnerships.
“Our objective is to transform international relationships into real opportunities that benefit our members while contributing to Malaysia’s tourism growth and regional economic cooperation,” he said.
Exploring Growth Opportunities Through Halal Tourism
As part of the trade mission, MyBHA representatives participated as Hosted Buyers at MEGA HALAL Bangkok 2026 from 15 to 17 July 2026.
The international Halal trade exhibition brought together entrepreneurs, exhibitors, buyers and industry leaders from various sectors.
These included:
- Food and beverages
- Health and wellness
- Beauty and personal care
- Fashion and apparel
MyBHA’s participation allowed the association to explore opportunities between the Halal economy and Malaysia’s hospitality sector.
Areas of interest included Muslim-friendly tourism, Halal hospitality services, wellness tourism and cross-border business partnerships.
During the event, MyBHA also signed an MoU with Comasia Limited to explore future collaboration in exhibitions, events and business initiatives.
Strengthening Digital and Tourism Industry Connections
Beyond tourism partnerships, MyBHA also engaged with key players in the regional travel ecosystem.
During a courtesy visit to Agoda’s Operational Headquarters in Bangkok, the association discussed digital transformation, online travel trends and the changing needs of hospitality operators.
The meeting highlighted the growing role of technology platforms in shaping the modern tourism experience.
MyBHA also visited the headquarters of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) to exchange views on sustainable tourism development, regional connectivity and industry collaboration.
The discussions reinforced the importance of knowledge sharing between tourism organisations across Asia-Pacific.
Learning From Bangkok’s Tourism Ecosystem
The trade mission also provided participants with opportunities to experience Bangkok’s tourism landscape firsthand.
Delegates explored the city’s river-based tourism environment, observing how attractions, transportation services and hospitality offerings work together to create integrated visitor experiences.
According to MyBHA, international exposure allows industry representatives to identify global best practices and adapt relevant ideas for Malaysia’s tourism sector.
Supporting Visit Malaysia 2026 Goals
The conclusion of the Bangkok trade mission supports MyBHA’s continued efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s international tourism presence.
As Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026, the association aims to expand partnerships, promote the accommodation sector and connect Malaysian businesses with new markets.
Moving forward, MyBHA plans to continue developing these partnerships through business matching programmes, industry exchanges, exhibitions and collaborative initiatives.
Through stronger regional cooperation, MyBHA hopes to contribute towards increasing tourist arrivals, expanding opportunities for hospitality businesses and enhancing Malaysia’s position as a leading tourism destination in Asia.
