KUALA LUMPUR, 23 OCTOBER - The Malaysian Retail Chain Association (MRCA) successfully convened retail captains, technology innovators, and policymakers at the MRCA Retail Tech Summit 2026, resulting in an actionable roadmap for domestic retailers to shift from basic automation toward intelligent, predictive commerce that enhances operational resilience and delivers measurable business value.

Held at W Hotel Kuala Lumpur and centred on the theme “Smart Retail, Real Impact”, the summit was graced by Guest of Honor YB Lau Weng San, Speaker of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DUN), alongside Dato’ Liew Bin President of MRCA, and Mr. Lim Ben Jie, Chief of Digital Division and Organizing Chairperson of the MRCA Retail Tech Summit. The MRCA Retail Tech Summit 2026 was supported by Diamond Partner Webby Group; Platinum Sponsors Time and Salesforce, Corporate Patrons RHB, U mobile Sdn Bhd, Lark, Berjaya Sompo Insurance, Adyen and Illuminext; and Supporting Partner Endeavor.

Retail Tech: Critical Economic Infrastructure

In his keynote address, YB Lau Weng San emphasized the anchor role of the retail and wholesale trade subsector as the heartbeat of Malaysia’s domestic economy and consumer marketplace.

“Retail is not merely adapting to digital transformation; it is actively shaping how consumers experience the modern digital economy. Consumer touchpoints have fundamentally shifted as brick-and-mortar operations and digital platforms converge into unified, omnichannel commerce. For modern retailers, adopting cloud architecture, real time analytics, automated inventory, and secure digital payment systems is no longer an optional upgrade, it is critical infrastructure vital to our national economic competitiveness.”

YB Lau also highlighted the strategic alignment between the retail industry and the MADANI Government’s digital initiatives, pointing to the mandate of the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO) under the Ministry of Digital in spearheading cross-sector AI adoption. He encouraged retail enterprises to actively leverage targeted funding mechanisms, while maintaining robust data governance and consumer trust in light of recent Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) amendments.

Technology Driving Real Bottom-Line Impact

Reemphasizing the summit’s core focus, Dato’ Liew Bin, President of MRCA emphasized that technology must translate into tangible business longevity and margin defense.

“Smart retail is not about adopting tech for the sake of novelty, it is about real impact. In an operating environment shaped by rising overheads and evolving shopper behaviors, traditional playbooks alone are insufficient. Whether it is using AI driven predictive analytics to forecast demand, orchestrating automated inventory, or delivering hyper-personalized customer journeys, technology serves as our sharpest tool for sustainable scaling,” he said.

Dato’ Liew added, with the supportive catalysts unveiled in Budget 2027, including dedicated allocations for AI adoption and fair market frameworks, Malaysian retailers are well-positioned to modernize confidently. Welcoming delegates, Mr. Lim Ben Jie, Organizing Chairperson of the Summit, noted that the summit agenda was curated to cut through digital buzzwords and address frontline operational realities.
