Gwee Chin Li is carrying forward a family legacy. As the second generation of the Sendok Group lineage, Gwee brings a mix of inherited industry insight and her forward-looking vision to the brand. Today, she is steering CAM beyond its well-earned reputation for dependable commercial vehicles, toward a larger mission: to enrich Malaysia's mobility ecosystem, empower businesses to reach their full potential, and create transport solutions that benefit communities and contribute to the country's economic aspirations.

Consistent, Active, Mobile

In the mobility landscape, efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability are critical. Industry players, such as CAM Malaysia, are playing a crucial role in powering local businesses and communities. It isn’t just a brand that builds vehicles—it’s a homegrown movement shaping how Malaysians move, connect, and grow.

“Mobility is not just about vehicles. It’s about giving people and businesses the freedom to go further—on their terms,” said Gwee Chin Li, Head of Business Development at CAM Malaysia.

CAM—the acronym for Consistent, Active, Mobile—is a Malaysian brand under R&A Marketing Sdn Bhd, part of the Sendok Group, a family-run conglomerate with over four decades of industry heritage. The group began in the 1980s as a second-hand vehicle and spare parts business and has since evolved into a diversified automotive enterprise. This grounding in the local market gives CAM a deep understanding of Malaysia’s commercial needs.

A Product Range That Empowers Every Sector

Over the past 15 years, CAM has developed an extensive and purposeful product range that includes pickup trucks, light trucks, 10–to 18–seater vans, minibuses, caravans, and even heavy-duty trucks and mining vehicles. Every vehicle is developed with one goal in mind—to enable the real economy.

“Our customers aren’t just buyers. They’re tour operators, school van drivers, mobile health providers, local councils, and entrepreneurs. They move Malaysia,” said Gwee. “So when we build our vehicles, we make sure they’re ready to perform, endure, and adapt to what our users need, and align to shifts.”

For instance, CAM was the first to launch Malaysia’s electric van, introducing green mobility well before it became a national focus. In 2010, they introduced the longest van in Malaysia, the Placer-X, an 18-seater van. By 2015, the brand was already offering motorhome solutions based on its pickup platform. Today, it is developing a motorhome on the chassis of its popular minibus model—reflecting a growing demand for lifestyle-based travel and work mobility.

In 2024, CAM launched its six-speed auto transmission model designed with comfort, performance, and driver ease in mind. “We listen to what the market wants,” said Gwee. “And right now, it’s convenience, fuel efficiency, and reliability.”

Local Assembly, National Impact

Unlike many brands in its segment, CAM vehicles are assembled in Malaysia. The company operates its production facilities, including a dedicated heavy truck assembly line and a light commercial vehicle line that assembles vans and minibuses. This local assembly model not only strengthens CAM’s control over quality and delivery timelines but also ensures the vehicles are tailored to Malaysian roads, terrain, and regulations. “Being close to the customer also means we can respond faster—with parts, with service, with upgrades,” Gwee said.

CAM’s ecosystem  includes a nationwide network of sales and service dealers, trained extensively to provide end-to-end customer support. “There’s often a misconception when it comes to China-associated brands. People worry about maintenance and parts. That’s why we make it a point to ensure strong local support and continuous training,” Gwee added. In 2024 alone, CAM has already conducted several nationwide technical training programs with support from its principal in China.

To ease customer ownership and lower entry barriers, CAM is currently offering a two-year free service package for its 18-seater long-wheelbase vans Placer-X and Kingo Plus 6AT—a model that has become a bestseller. The package, valued at up to RM5,000, is part of CAM’s broader campaign to build trust and offer value in a challenging economic climate.

Shaping the Shift from Mass to Personal Mobility

CAM’s commitment to solving real-world transport problems is best reflected in its work with Malaysia’s public transport ecosystem. In 2025, CAM completed the largest fleet delivery in its history—a delivery of 300 Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT) vans to Rapid KL, part of the Prasarana Group.

The DRT vans help solve the first-mile, last-mile problem by operating flexible routes into residential areas that traditional 44-seater buses can’t reach. “It’s a big shift. Large buses serve high-density routes, but people also need transport in lower-density neighbourhoods. That’s where our vans come in,” said Gwee.

CAM is also seeing similar trends in the tourism sector, which makes up 50% of its customer base. “These days, families want private group travel. If you’re travelling with your parents, siblings, and kids—maybe 12 to 15 people—you don’t want to share a bus with strangers. You want privacy and control over your schedule,” she added.

This changing behaviour is fuelling demand for vans that are comfortable, versatile, and easy to drive—something CAM has prioritised in its newer models.

Powertrain Performance That Packs a Punch

Behind CAM’s clean designs and local service appeal lies a commitment to robust engineering. The brand’s vehicles are designed for challenging terrains, striking a balance between power and efficiency.

“People used to focus on engine size—CC—but now, it’s all about horsepower and torque,” Gwee explained. One standout is the Kingo 6-Speed Auto Transmission Van, which delivers 450PS of horsepower from a 2.4-litre engine—making it both powerful and efficient.”

From Peninsular Malaysia to East Malaysia, CAM ensures product consistency while allowing for local servicing and flexible deployment across industries.

Delivering Beyond Roads

Beyond light commercial vehicles, CAM is also involved in heavy-duty truck solutions—delivering units for national-scale infrastructure projects such as the Borneo Highway and the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL).

But the story doesn’t stop at transport. CAM’s parent company, Sendok Group, continues to operate one of the most enduring second-hand spare parts businesses in the country. Drawing on its origins in the automotive recycling sector, the group is now actively promoting end-of-life vehicle recycling, aligning with the national sustainability agenda and the goals of the circular economy.

“We believe that every vehicle should have a second life. Whether it’s through reuse, recycling, or remanufacturing, we’re building a responsible ecosystem,” said Gwee.

Electric Futures and a New Mobility Narrative

While many companies are just entering the electric vehicle (EV) space, CAM is already laying the groundwork with electric vans and light trucks. These early initiatives position the brand to scale when infrastructure and regulations catch up.

“We’re not waiting for the market to be ready. We’re preparing for it,” Gwee said. “And because our commercial vehicles are locally assembled, we can respond faster to feedback and optimise design to local usage patterns.”

CAM’s long-term vision is aligned with Malaysia’s aspirations for carbon neutrality and thoughtful urban planning. By offering affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly vehicles, the company hopes to make sustainable mobility accessible to all, not just a premium feature for a few.

CAM Day: Connecting With Purpose

Amid all the innovation and business momentum, CAM remains grounded in its relationship with customers. Events like CAM Day are organised to celebrate milestones, connect with end users, listen to feedback, and build deeper community ties.

“It’s not an easy time for many businesses right now,” said Gwee. “But if we can sit down, talk, and find solutions together—that’s the real value. CAM Day is about reconnecting with the people who drive us forward.”

The company sees its role not just as a vehicle distributor, but as an ecosystem enabler—bringing together assembly, parts, service, after-sales support, and flexible financial incentives to help businesses realise their full potential.

A Malaysian Brand Driving National Progress

CAM Malaysia’s story is one of steady, purposeful growth rooted in local understanding, technical capability, and national relevance. As the company continues to expand its offerings and electrify its future, one thing remains clear: it is here to help businesses move forward, communities become more connected, and the nation reach new heights in mobility and sustainability.

“We’re proud to be Malaysian. But more importantly, we’re proud to be building something that helps Malaysians—every day, in every way.”
