MALAYSIA SME Media Group and MetaHub have launched the MALAYSIA SME CUP 2026, a corporate football tournament designed to bring business owners, managers and employees together through sport, team building and stronger workplace connections.

By the MALAYSIA SME Editorial Team

The MALAYSIA SME CUP 2026 will bring together up to 24 company teams for a one-day football tournament at Footballhub SkyArena, Genting Permai, on 14 November 2026. The launch was held at the KL City Gateway Sales Gallery on 24th August 2026. Beyond the competition, however, the initiative is built around a broader objective: to create a shared experience that allows people across different levels of an organisation to connect outside the conventional workplace environment.

Wayne Lim, Chief Group Editor and Founder of MALAYSIA SME, shared that sport offers a natural platform for building stronger relationships, both within companies and across the wider business community.  “We have always believed that sports connect people the best,” said Lim. The idea builds on MALAYSIA SME’s experience in organising community activities that move beyond conventional business networking.

Lim noted that while business owners regularly attend conferences, dinners, lunches, and networking functions, these formal environments do not always lead to deeper relationships. Sport, he believes, creates a different dynamic.

“When you put people on the pickleball court, whether they run a multinational or a multimillion-dollar company, they are just themselves,” he said. “It tears down all the barriers.”

People speak and know each other so much better. They connect better.” The MALAYSIA SME CUP extends this approach from business-owner networking to the wider organisation.

Bringing Owners and Employees Onto the Same Field

One defining feature of the tournament is its emphasis on owner and senior management participation. Each participating company will field a squad of 10 to 12 comprising owners, managers and employees, with the owner or a company director expected to either play or manage the team from the touchline.

Bringing different levels of an organisation together through sport can give owners a different perspective on their people. “For business to thrive and be successful, the power is in its people,” said Lim. The sporting environment, he added, can reveal qualities that may not always be immediately visible in the workplace.

Lim illustrated this with the example of an employee who may have a relatively quiet or operational role in the company but demonstrates unexpected leadership when placed in a team environment.

“The moment this person is on the football pitch, they are natural leaders.”

The reverse can also be true. Competitive situations can reveal how individuals respond to pressure, follow instructions and support teammates when circumstances become difficult. According to Lim, this gives business owners an opportunity to see different dimensions of their employees. “You can see who the true warriors for your company are.”

Fast Moving Team Building

MetaHub, which operates sports facilities and organises sporting events, tournaments and leagues, is partnering MALAYSIA SME Media Group to deliver the tournament. Ken Ong of MetaHub emphasised that the MALAYSIA SME CUP is not intended to be exclusively about footballing ability.

“The purpose of this Cup is for team building,” said Ong. The tournament will use a seven-a-side format, with 12-minute matches designed to keep the competition fast-moving while allowing teams to participate throughout the morning.

Each company is guaranteed five group-stage matches before the tournament progresses to the semi-finals and final. The event is scheduled to begin at 8am and conclude by 2pm, with the full-size Footballhub SkyArena divided into four tournament pitches for match day.

Long-term Team Journey

While the football tournament is at the centre of the initiative, the MALAYSIA SME CUP has been structured as a longer team-building journey. Participating companies will receive two pre-tournament coaching sessions, giving teams the opportunity to prepare and build camaraderie before match day.

Each company will also receive customised team jerseys, while meals and hydration will be provided for players during the tournament. Professional photography and video coverage will capture the teams and their participation. Registration, fixtures, live scores and standings will be managed through MetaHub’s event platform.

The journey will culminate in an Owners’ Gala in early December, where participating teams will come together again following the tournament. This longer format reflects the intention for the experience to go beyond a conventional corporate offsite. From training and preparation to match day and the gala, companies can build a shared experience over several months.

24 Companies for the Inaugural Cup

Participation in the inaugural MALAYSIA SME CUP 2026 is limited to 24 company teams on a first-confirmed basis. Registration closes on 6 October 2026, with an entry fee of RM2,990 per company team. The tournament will take place on Saturday, 14 November 2026, from 8am to 2pm at Footballhub SkyArena, Genting Permai, followed by the Owners’ Gala in early December.
