KUALA LUMPUR, 4 DECEMBER 2025 (THURSDAY) — Malaysia recorded a major breakthrough in its trade engagement with Timor-Leste, securing RM78.48 million in potential export sales during the Export Acceleration Mission (EAM) held from 17 to 21 November 2025. The strong commercial outcome underscored the growing compatibility between Malaysian exporters and the developing Timorese market.
The mission, organised by MATRADE in collaboration with the Embassy of Malaysia in Dili, witnessed 100 business meetings take place between 19 Malaysian companies and 61 Timorese firms. Over 100 business inquiries were received, reflecting robust interest from both sides to deepen trade cooperation.

A significant highlight was the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between Mighty Skills International College and five major Timorese education institutions —Arvec Development Group (ARVEC), Beyond Success Technology Timor LDA (BSTT), Dili Institute of Technology (DIT), East Timor Development Agency (ETDA) and Fundasaun Santa Marta Regina (FSMR)— strengthening Malaysia’s role in supporting the country’s human capital development through TVET expertise.
The mission’s achievements came at a pivotal moment, following Timor-Leste’s historic accession as ASEAN’s 11th member during the 47th ASEAN Summit on 26 October 2025. This milestone opened new opportunities for Malaysia to gain first-mover advantage in the newly formalised ASEAN market with substantial untapped potential.
Throughout the four-day programme, delegates participated in a business seminar and pitching sessions attended by more than 150 industry players and media representatives. Experts from the World Bank Group, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Miranda Law Firm provided data-driven insights into the country’s economic direction, infrastructure plans, and high-growth sectors. A panel featuring the National Petroleum Authority (ANP), Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste (CCI-TL), and members of the Malaysian diaspora offered practical guidance for market entry.

Industry visits to major retail outlets and the Tibar Bay Port further exposed participants to local supply chain realities and emerging business opportunities. Networking sessions hosted by various partners added momentum by opening additional doors for collaboration.
With Timor-Leste accelerating economic diversification and infrastructure upgrades, Malaysia’s participation is timely. The mission reinforced Malaysia’s commitment to diversifying export markets and strengthening its position as a competitive, trusted trading partner within ASEAN and beyond.
