Serdang, 8 May 2025 — Malaysia’s automotive industry is charging forward into the future, as the curtain lifts on the Malaysia Autoshow 2025—an event that continues to grow in stature, scale, and substance.
Officiated by YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), the event showcases Malaysia’s ambitions as both a regional leader in mobility and a global advocate for sustainable transportation.
“It is truly a pleasure for me to launch the Malaysia Autoshow 2025,” said Tengku Zafrul. “Being here for the third consecutive year, I can see how this event has grown—both in scale and substance—to significantly contribute to Malaysia’s socio-economic development and shape the future of our mobility.”
This year’s Autoshow features over 200 exhibitors and more than 500 vehicles, including a record number of electric vehicles (EVs) across the passenger and two-wheeler segments. “These figures have set a new benchmark for the show,” said Tengku Zafrul, underscoring the event’s reflection of the nation’s shift toward cleaner, more sustainable transportation.
Driving ASEAN’s Mobility Vision
As Malaysia assumes the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, Tengku Zafrul highlighted the nation’s leadership in shaping the region’s mobility and sustainability agenda.
“ASEAN must remain agile, forward-thinking and most importantly, united in navigating evolving global challenges,” he stressed, noting the bloc’s strategic position amid global trade tensions and shifting geopolitical alliances.
Malaysia has contributed to several ASEAN-level initiatives, including developing policy guidelines to support the ASEAN EV Implementation Roadmap and introducing a unified Battery Swapping Standard across the region. These efforts aim to harmonise infrastructure, reduce costs, and improve EV accessibility and convenience throughout Southeast Asia.
“This harmonisation not only reduces operational costs and attracts more investments, but also enhances convenience, accessibility, and consumer confidence,” he said.
Tengku Zafrul further emphasised the importance of deepening regional supply chain integration among ASEAN Member States to harness unique strengths and build a resilient, complementary ecosystem.
“By fostering complementary supply chains and developing markets within ASEAN, we can significantly boost production efficiency, reduce dependence on external markets, and build a more agile and robust automotive ecosystem,” he explained.
NIMP 2030 and Malaysia’s Automotive Rise

At the national level, the Minister affirmed that Malaysia’s progress has been anchored by strong policies, including the National Automotive Policy 2020 (NAP 2020) and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030).
“A key mission of this plan is our Push for Net Zero, one of whose strategic initiatives is on e-mobility, to cultivate a vibrant, greener, and more prosperous Malaysia by 2030.”

In 2024, Malaysia’s Total Industry Volume (TIV) reached 816,747 units, making it the second-largest automotive market in Southeast Asia and the 23rd largest globally. The EV sector, in particular, has made notable progress:
- 8,658 applications approved for the MARiiCAS E-bike rebate programme
- 4,161 EV charging stations installed nationwide as of March 2025
- 43,572 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) on Malaysian roads
- 9,880 EVs and hybrids sold in Q1 2025
“From rebates for e-motorbikes to a growing national EV charging network, the government is committed to cultivating a sustainable EV ecosystem,” the Minister said.
Autoshow Milestones and the Future of Mobility

The Autoshow celebrated the increasing relevance and record-setting achievements, including marking the first time flying cars will be displayed at the event, signalling Malaysia’s readiness to explore new mobility frontiers.
“This event showcases the full spectrum of Malaysia’s automotive capabilities—bringing together OEMs, tech providers, policymakers, and consumers under one roof,” said Tengku Zafrul. He reiterated MITI’s unwavering support for Malaysia’s automotive industry and sustainability goals.
“MITI remains steadfast in its commitment to further advancing Malaysia’s automotive industry—whether by attracting high-value investments, or in holistically developing a sustainable automotive ecosystem.”
“I hope every participating brand, partner, and stakeholder will seize this opportunity to drive Malaysia and ASEAN’s mobility transformation, for the benefit of our people, industries, planet, and generations to come.”
