Kuala Lumpur: Following its recent Open Day and Semua House, Kain Fashion Incubator (KFI) is inviting Malaysian fashion practitioners to apply for its inaugural cohort. The six-month programme designed to help practitioners develop creatively distinctive and commercially sustainable labels. Ten emerging and established practitioners will be selected, with each receiving a RM5,000 production grant to develop a capsule collection for presentation at a public showcase held in conjunction with KL Festival 2027.

The Open Day offered prospective applicants an introduction to KFI’s programme, mentors and dedicated incubator space, as well as the opportunity to learn more about the support available throughout the six-month journey.

KFI welcomes practitioners at different stages of development; from those establishing an independent label or collective, to those growing an existing business or returning to the industry with experience and a renewed direction. Applicants should demonstrate a distinct creative point of view and a readiness to take their practice further. The KFI team is looking forward to receiving applications from designers, emerging and established, to allow them to bridge the gap between where a designer can be, to where they can go, and who they can become in the grander scheme of the fashion world.

What Does Kain Fashion Incubator Do?

KFI unites creative development and commercial learning, guiding participants through the practical realities of building a fashion business; from pricing, production and merchandising, to communications, market access and retail readiness. Participants will benefit from mentorship, industry-led learning, business development support, dedicated workspace and access to industry networks through curated workshops and panels featuring leaders across the creative industry. Designer Uzair Shoid, GHOSTBOY co-founder David Han, Dia Guild co-founder aisha Hassan, and fashion critic Zaihani Mohd Zain (Kak Zai) will be present, with additional speakers to be announced in the coming weeks.

About Kain Fashion Incubator

Taking its name from “kain”, the Malaysian word for fabric, the programme draws on Malaysia’s textile traditions and practices of craft while exploring how they can be reinterpreted through contemporary design. Based at Semua House within Kuala Lumpur’s historic fashion and textile area, KFI takes shape amid the wider revitalisation effort of the historic core, reconnecting the area’s textile heritage with a new generation of Malaysian designers. In doing so, it supports the wider aspirations of the Warisan KL and its initiative, and contributes to Kuala Lumpur’s role as a City of Design within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

KFI is made possible through the Downtown KL Grants programme, supported by the Ministry of Finance and implemented by Think City in partnership with Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Yayasan Hasanah. This support is complemented by the investment and industry partnerships mobilised by Semua House, showing how public funding can encourage wider business and stakeholder participation in making Downtown Kuala Lumpur more vibrant, inclusive, and liveable.

Applications are open for only 10 places and close on 6 November 2026.
