CelcomDigi Berhad, together with MyDigital Corporation, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), and Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ), has launched Malaysia’s first AI-powered traffic intelligence platform. This collaboration marks a milestone for Malaysia’s Digital Economy Blueprint and accelerates the nation’s smart city vision.

The pilot will run in high-traffic areas of Damansara, Petaling Jaya – including PJ Sentral, SS2, and the Damansara–Puchong Expressway (LDP). The system uses AI, 5G connectivity, and advanced analytics to generate real-time insights. Importantly, it also integrates with MBPJ’s existing infrastructure, making adoption smoother and more cost-efficient.

Smarter Cities Through AI and 5G

The platform brings three core features. First, AI-powered traffic lights predict flows and adjust cycles to reduce waiting times. Second, urban planning tools provide data-driven insights for road design and future upgrades. Finally, dynamic diversion systems suggest alternate routes during peak hours, construction, or emergencies.

Together, these functions ease congestion, improve safety, and give city planners reliable data for long-term development.

A Collaborative Step Toward Malaysia’s Smart City Vision

The partnership was formalised at the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025, themed “AI Cities: Shaping Our Digital Future“. The event was officiated by YB Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital.

“This collaboration exemplifies the power of partnerships in driving Malaysia’s smart city agenda,” said Gobind. By bringing together government, industry and technology expertise, we are making cities more liveable, sustainable, and efficient. This is also in line with our AI Nation agenda.”

Building Smarter, Safer Roads for Malaysians

CelcomDigi’s Acting CEO, Albern Murty, described the project as a blueprint for wider adoption. “This pilot in Petaling Jaya is a first step towards scaling intelligent traffic systems nationwide, building a digital ecosystem where AI and connectivity come together to create safer, smarter, and more efficient cities,” he said.

Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon echoed the importance of the project. “Traffic congestion and urban mobility are long-standing challenges for our community, and this initiative gives us a new way to manage them effectively. With the support of the government agencies and CelcomDigi, we are bringing smarter, data-driven infrastructure to PJ that will directly benefit our residents and set a model for other cities in Malaysia.”

Toward Nationwide Adoption

The initiative also supports Malaysia’s National Digital Network (JENDELA) by showing how connectivity and data can drive innovation. Furthermore, CelcomDigi and its partners plan to expand the solution to other major cities. As a result, Malaysia will lay the foundation for a nationwide system of intelligent, AI-enabled transportation.
