Historic gathering brings together leaders from ASEAN and China to strengthen economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and people-to-people ties.

The Federation of Hokkien Associations of Malaysia, together with the ASEAN Federation of Fujian Associations, officially opened the 1st ASEAN Federation of Fujian Associations Congress and ASEAN Potential Development Forum at Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

The landmark event, attended by distinguished leaders from ASEAN nations, China, and beyond, marks a new chapter of collaboration for Fujian communities across the region.

Tan Sri Lim Hock San, President of the Federation of Hokkien Associations of Malaysia and Rotating Chairman of the ASEAN Federation of Fujian Associations, highlighted the significance of the forum in his keynote address:

“ASEAN is one of the most dynamic and promising regions in the world. With a population of 680 million, a young and vibrant workforce, abundant natural resources, rich cultural diversity and relatively stable political and economic conditions, the region holds great promise. In 2024, ASEAN’s combined GDP surpassed USD 4 trillion, making it the world’s fifth-largest economy, and showing strong growth prospects.”

“Among these 680 million people, over 30 million are ethnic Chinese trace their roots to Fujian.”

He stressed that the Congress is more than an economic platform. It is a strategic vision for integrating regional resources, deepening cooperation, and unlocking new avenues in education, technology, green energy, cultural creativity, and youth entrepreneurship.

Strengthening ASEAN–China and Global Partnerships

The Congress comes at a time when ASEAN–China ties continue to deepen. In 2024, bilateral trade exceeded USD 950 billion, while initiatives like the Belt and Road and RCEP further expand cooperation in infrastructure, digitalisation, and cultural exchange.

At the same time, ASEAN is strengthening ties with global partners including Japan, Korea, the EU, the Middle East, and South Asia, bringing new momentum to the region’s growth.

Economic and Tourism Impact for Malaysia

Beyond dialogue, the forum is also a boost to Malaysia’s economy. By attracting participants and guests from around the world, the event has already created positive spillovers for the hospitality, F&B, and transport sectors, while also giving visitors an opportunity to experience Malaysia’s multicultural heritage.

Building Bridges for the Future

Tan Sri Lim emphasised the Fujian spirit of resilience, enterprise, and unity, calling on associations to act as a bridge for peace, integration, and cooperation.

“I believe through the profound exchanges and discussions at this conference, we shall gather collective wisdom, foster the sharing of ideas, and contribute renewed positive momentum to the development of our region,” he said.

With more than 255 member associations across Malaysia, the Federation of Hokkien Associations remains one of the largest and most vibrant Chinese organisations in the country. Now, through the ASEAN Federation of Fujian Associations, it is poised to amplify regional collaboration and ensure a more inclusive, sustainable future.
