Since Carl Benz registered his patent for the motor car in 1886 and Gottlieb Daimler built his motorised carriage shortly afterwards, the history of Mercedes-Benz has known only one direction: forward. From Bertha Benz’s legendary pioneering journey to speed records, autonomous driving milestones, vision cars and high-tech drive systems, the brand has continuously redefined the automobile.
The anniversary year in 2026 was defined by the biggest product launch programme in the brand’s history, beginning with the world premiere of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class on 29 January 2026. Over the following two years, more than 40 new Mercedes-Benz models were introduced across all segments, blending tradition with innovation and setting new standards for the industry.
Mercedes-Benz highlighted its pioneering spirit, engineering leadership and technological leadership as core elements of its DNA. Innovations ranging from the Mercedes 35 hp in 1900 to electric milestones such as the VISION EQXX and the CONCEPT AMG GT XX illustrated how heritage continues to shape the future.
Throughout its history, Mercedes-Benz has set benchmarks in safety, comfort, performance and design — from the safety body and Anti-lock Braking System ABS to ESP, PRE-SAFE and today’s MB.DRIVE driver assistance technologies. The brand’s legacy of innovation was further reflected in its success in motorsport, autonomous driving development and electric mobility.
The anniversary also spotlighted iconic vehicles that shaped automotive history, including the Benz Patent Motor Car, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”, the Silver Arrows, the S-Class and the G-Class, all of which represent the innovative strength of the brand.
“Heritage Creates Future,” Mercedes-Benz reaffirmed, as it concluded its 140th anniversary celebrations by positioning innovation, quality and pioneering spirit as the foundation for the next era of mobility.
