The Communications and Multimedia Consumer Forum of Malaysia (CFM) has welcomed Budget 2026 as a forward-looking plan that puts Malaysian consumers at the heart of the nation’s digital transformation.
The organisation commended the Government’s efforts to bridge connectivity gaps, enhance data security, and promote digital literacy, ensuring that every Malaysian can participate confidently in an increasingly digital economy.
“Budget 2026 clearly reflects the Government’s commitment to ensuring that no consumer is left behind in Malaysia’s digital journey. The initiatives announced not only expand access and affordability but also strengthen digital safety, inclusivity, and long-term consumer trust,” said Ms Yap Yoke Har, Chairperson of CFM.
Bridging the Connectivity Divide
A key highlight of Budget 2026 is the Sambungan Kabel Dasar Laut MADANI (SALAM) initiative, which will significantly improve internet speed and reliability across Sabah and Sarawak, reducing the digital divide between East and Peninsular Malaysia.
This initiative will enhance online learning, enable smoother video streaming, and improve access to essential e-services for millions of consumers.
CFM also highlighted the importance of strengthening connectivity in healthcare. The allocation to improve internet access in public hospitals and clinics will enable telehealth services and digital healthcare solutions, particularly benefiting rural communities.
Empowering Rural and Underserved Communities
Budget 2026’s emphasis on the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) aims to upskill rural communities by providing them with digital literacy and online entrepreneurship training.
Through NADI, more Malaysians will gain the opportunity to learn, earn, and thrive in the digital economy, supporting national goals for inclusive digital participation and workforce readiness.
CFM noted that such initiatives not only empower individuals but also help strengthen the economic resilience of underserved communities.
Building Safer, Smarter Digital Experiences
In line with Malaysia’s commitment to data protection and consumer safety, the Budget introduces several initiatives to enhance national readiness for digital risks and emergencies.
The Early Warning System (EWS) enhancement will provide Malaysians with faster alerts during disasters and emergencies, ensuring that vital safety information reaches consumers promptly through mobile and digital channels.
Meanwhile, the establishment of the Sovereign AI Cloud and the AI Transformation Centre signals the Government’s intent to promote ethical, secure, and culturally responsible AI development, safeguarding data privacy while advancing innovation.
Encouraging Digital Responsibility and Consumer Awareness
CFM emphasised that Malaysia’s progress as a connected nation must go hand-in-hand with consumer empowerment and responsible digital engagement.
“We encourage all Malaysians to be smart consumers — understand your rights, stay alert to online risks, and take full advantage of the improved connectivity and services now made possible under Budget 2026,” added Ms Yap.
CFM reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with industry players to strengthen consumer protection, resolve service-related complaints, and promote a culture of informed and responsible digital participation among Malaysians.
