The Malaysia Budget & Business Hotel Association (MyBHA®) has expressed full support for CUEPACS’ recent call to review hotel accommodation allowances for civil servants. The association noted that rising living costs make it essential for government employees on official duty to receive fair allowances that allow them to stay in safe and professional accommodation.
Emphasis on Legally Registered Hotels
MyBHA® underscored that such allowances must be strictly limited to accommodation providers that are legally registered and licensed with the relevant authorities. This includes hotels, motels, budget hotels, and other legitimate establishments that comply with national and local regulations and contribute tax revenue to the government.
The association warned that extending allowances to unlicensed or illegal operators would not only encourage unfair competition but also expose guests to risks due to lack of safety and regulatory standards.
Protecting the Industry and the Economy
Directing allowances only to legitimate operators would:
- Strengthen the sustainability and professionalism of the hospitality industry.
- Safeguard government tax revenue.
- Prevent the growth of illegal and unsafe lodging businesses.
- Foster a fairer ecosystem for all players in Malaysia’s tourism and hospitality sector.
Quote from MyBHA President
“MyBHA® fully supports the proposal to review hotel accommodation allowances for civil servants, but we must ensure these allowances are channelled only to legal, registered, and tax-paying providers. This will protect civil servants’ welfare, strengthen the hospitality industry, safeguard revenue, and prevent illegal operators from thriving,” said Dr. Sri Ganesh Michiel, National President of MyBHA® and President of the Malaysian Tourism Federation (MTF).
Call for Verification System
To ensure transparency, MyBHA® has urged the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MoTAC) to establish an official verification system or list of registered accommodation providers. Such a system would provide clarity for claims, guarantee accountability, and ensure public funds are directed towards regulated, tax-compliant and safe accommodation.
Strengthening Malaysia’s Tourism Reputation
MyBHA® believes this move will enhance transparency, support the nation’s economic ecosystem, and reflect Malaysia’s commitment to professionalism and integrity in the hospitality and tourism industry.
The association, which represents licensed budget and business hotels nationwide, reiterated its commitment to supporting government policies that promote fair competition, sustainable growth, and high standards within the sector.
