Week-long Malaysian craft promotion at 1Borneo Hypermall

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The Sabah branch of the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation will stage the state-level Third Malaysian Craft Promotion at the 1Borneo Hypermall, near here.

The week-long event starts on Nov 24.

Its director, Mohammad Latiff Dirun said the programme, themed "Craft Generates Economy", will offer various activities in an effort to enhance the marketing and promotion of Malaysian craft products, particularly at the domestic level.

He also said the programme which is held annually had received very encouraging response from the local community and tourists, especially for craft products of quality and which had its own uniqueness.

"This is evident from the increasing craft sales every year. The target for this year is about RM400,000," he told Bernama, here today.

He said the programme is also aimed at assisting local handicraft entrepreneurs to market their products to various sections of society and also to both local and foreign tourists.

"This indirectly will expand the scope of marketing for the products and increase their income while serving to spur Malaysia's craft industry," he added.

Mohammad Latiff said among the activities to be held in conjunction with the promotion campaign is craft sales, the exhibition of new products, craft demonstrations as well as education and interactive craft.

He said the craft sales activity will have the participation of 70 entrepreneurs from throughout the country, including Kelantan, Sarawak, Kedah, Melaka, Selangor and Terengganu.

It will encompass craft areas such as jungle produce, textiles, multicultural craft and metal works.

Also on display will be new batik creations based on ethnic Sabah features, batik fashion, products from forest yam (buntoi) and an exhibition on manufacturing and production technology (research products).

The event will also feature a weaving demonstration.
