Varsities must provide conducive environment for entrepreneurship

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 14 (Bernama) -- Universities should provide good facilities and conducive environment for entrepreneurship to encourage students to embark in business.

University Kebangsaan Malaysia's (UKM) Centre for Entrepreneurship SMEs Development director Prof Dr Mohd Fauzi Jani said lack of facilities in entrepreneurship was among the obstacles in attracting students to be become entrepreneurs.

This can result in students not wanting to take up entrepreneurship courses in universities, he told Bernama after participating as a panellist at a two-day seminar on entrepreneurship in higher education, here, Wednesday.

Mohd Fauzi said lecturers and experts need to guide the students on how to become a good entrepreneur, covering such topics as product marketing and promotion rather than merely creating or having a product in their hand.

Good facilities, together with a well-rounded programme, can help the students to expand their ideas and get involved in business, he added.

Meanwhile, University of Amsterdam's Professor of Entrepreneurship Prof G.T Vinig suggested that establishing as many strong networks with people in business industry is vital for young entrepreneurs, as this will contribute towards the success of their business careers.

"Network is very important and once they build a good rapport with experienced entrepreneurs, they will benefit from what they learn and it may prevent them from making mistakes in managing their businesses.

"Entrepreneurship is about difficulties that new beginners have to learn in running their business. Education about entrepreneurship, therefore, is extremely important," he said.
