Treat SMI bosses well, banks told

KUALA LUMPUR: Banks, whether government or privately owned, should not reject loan applications from entrepreneurs of small and medium industries (SMIs) because they are unable to speak in English or not dressed properly. MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting also said banks should not approve loans based on the racial background of applicants.

“Although they (entrepreneurs) go to the banks in slippers and singlets, banks should treat them well and approve their loans if they deserve the facility.”

He said this when launching a book in Mandarin, Teh Hong Piow: A Banking Thoroughbred at Menara Public Bank here yesterday.

Ong said he had received numerous complaints from SMI entrepreneurs about poor treatment by banks and of their loan applications being rejected.

“They need the loans for their business which will then create employment opportunities for others,” he added. – Bernama
