Three new categories for 2008 SME awards
SERI KEMBANGAN: The SMI Association of Malaysia has introduced three new awards – Young Entrepreneur Award, Government-linked Enterprises Excellence Award and Social Responsibility Excellence Award – for SME Recognition Award 2008. National president Chua Tiam Wee said small and medium enterprises (SMEs) accounted for 99.2% of local business establishments.
“SMEs represent at least 65.1% of workforce and contribute 47.3% to the country’s gross domestic product,” he said after the launch of the award yesterday.
Themed “Strategic Positioning Towards Global Competitiveness”, the SME Recognition Award 2008 will have 88 winners in 16 categories.
“This year, we anticipate more than 300 submissions for the awards,” Chua said, adding that it received 250 submissions last year.
According to him, nominees would be judged based on five core evaluation criteria, including management philosophies and financial performance.
In addition, the audit committee would seek winning qualities such as ambition, uniqueness and implementation effectiveness as well as social contribution.
The award, which will be presented in January 2009, encourages all SMEs to renounce old practices, adopt a new paradigm shift and thinking as well as be innovative in creating a unique positioning for themselves in the global market.
Organised by SMI Association, the award has DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd as its presenter and the Star Media Group, comprising The Star daily, RedFM, 98.8FM and Shanghai magazine, as its media partner. The main sponsors are Standard Chartered Bank, Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd and OCBC Bank (M) Bhd.
