Tap NEM Growth Potentials, Sarawak Entrepreneurs Told

KUCHING, April 24 (Bernama) -- Entrepreneurs in Sarawakare urged to tap the new growth potentials which the New Economic Model (NEM)is expected to generate by changing their mindset.

Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry,Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan, said the NEM would offer new opportunities which theentrepreneurs could tap.

"Reliance on the government, political patronage andthe rent-seeking mentality should not be in the dictionary of the entrepreneursnow," he said at the opening of the Permodalan Nasional Bhd-MalaysianIndustrial Development Finance Bhd Entrepreneur Seminar here on Saturday.

Over 700 entrepreneurs attended the seminar which washeld in conjunction with the Malaysian Unit Trust Week 2010 at Wisma BapaMalaysia, Petra Jaya here.

Sagan said the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), oneof the main engines of growth, were expected to contribute 37 per cent to thecountry's gross national product this year compared with 32 per cent last year.

"Currently, the SMEs constituted 99 per cent of thetotal registered business establishments in Malaysia, contributing 56 per centof the total employment," he said.

He said entrepreneurs, Bumiputeras or non-Bumiputeras,could capitalise on the opportunities available, including the incentivesschemes offered by the ministry to take the industry to a higher level.

Over three million businesses registered with theCompanies Commission of Malaysia and 960 firms listed on Bursa Malaysia had acapital of over RM1 trillion, he said.
