Taib: Sarawak Sets Up Tourist Wholesale Department
MIRI, April 11 (Bernama) -- The state government will set up a Tourist Wholesale Department, an agency that will coordinate all activities in the Sarawak tourism industry, said Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
He said the department would be launched next year with an allocation of RM3 million in the agenda to turn Miri into a resort city.
It would guide the whole tourism industry in the state by providing information and training to all those wishing to venture into the lucrative industry, said Taib at a dinner with the Sarawak Bumiputera Traders Association, here last night.
"This is our way, but all this requires a major organisation so that it can become a guide to the cooks, restaurant workers, tourist guides, musicians, dancers and choreographers, and those who can take people to areas to observe life in the longhouse," he said.
The resort city had been accepted as a potential strategy to raise the income of small and medium industry (SMI) operators in the oil city, he said. -- BERNAMA
