TWU Wants Entrepreneur Scheme For Transport Company Drivers To Be Abolished
KUALA LUMPUR, 8 Feb (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Transport Workers Union (TWU) wants the contract system, known as the entrepreneur scheme, for workers in transport companies to be abolished.
Its secretary-general, Datuk Zainal Rampak, claimed that the system, which he said was introduced for transport company drivers and promised of better income, actually burdened them.
This, he said, was because the drivers were not paid a fixed salary, but relied on payment for number of trips made, and did not contribute to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) as well as the Social Security Organisation (Socso).
"The time has come for something to be done to protect the workers from the scheme which has existed since the colonial days. Before, it was known as lease.
"If this contract system continues and the workers have no EPF fund, what will happen to their wife and children if anything happens to them, he told reporters here Tuesday.
Zainal also claimed that the scheme was one of the factors which contributed to accidents involving buses and lorries.
"If the driver carry more goods and make more trips, they will get more commission.
"That is why the drivers are prepared to drive continuously for more than 12 hours so that they can make more trips," he added.
He suggested that the Employment Act1955 be reviewed to provide the necessary protection to the drivers.
