Skills Certificate accreditation system to be reorganized, says Dr Subramaniam
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 30 (Bernama) -- The Human Resources Ministry will reorganise the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) accreditation system to empower its graduates with industry requirements and job standards.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said, the reorganisation was a ministry's agenda, which would be discussed with Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
"We are an agency responsible for the implementation of the agenda, so we will ensure the discussion goes well and the reorganisation takes place soon," he told reporters after attending a programme with providers of public and private training, here.
He said enhancement of the SKM course is carried out because a majority of graduates finished their studies after reaching Level 1 of the SKM, which only takes six months to complete.
"When the new system is implemented, graduates will be obligated to undergo a two-year course to complete Level 1, 2 and 3 of the SKM. They will then be eligible to go for Level 4 and 5 which will then qualify them to pursue a university diploma or degree," he said.
Dr Subramaniam said the current skills training module involves five stages which is six months each for Level 1, 2 and 3 while Level 4 and 5 will take a year each to complete.
The SKM is one of the guidelines used by the ministry to measure a worker's skill.
Dr Subramaniam added that the new system would make it easier for SKM graduates to enter the workforce, earn a higher income and give competition to academic graduates.
He said SKM training can assure the employability of graduates as the government has also provided various facilities and access to skills training as well as sponsorship for those eligible.
