Sibu To Be A Land Of Opportunity, Taib Tells Businessmen
SIBU, Feb 14(BERNAMA) -- Sibu, the largest town in Sarawak, is poised to be a land of many business opportunities, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said.
He said the development of the halal food hub in Tanjung Manis in the Sarikei Division would generate many such opportunities.
Taib said that halal food is a trillion dollar business, with the market extending beyond the Middle East to the US, Britain and other countries.
"And you do not have to be a Muslim to produce halal food," he said Sunday night at a Chinese New Year gathering organised by the United Chinese Association here.
"I am confident with your business experience, versatility and resilience, you will be equal to the task (of producing halal food)," he added.
He said that Malaysia, with its strict certification scheme, was highly regarded as a producer of halal food.
Rebutting pessimistic views expressed on the future of Sibu, he said the town was strategically located to serve as the processing, distribution and marketing centre of products.
Taib also said the Sibu-based shipbuilding industry was growing.
"We have people starting from zero who now are exporting all kinds of vessel all over the world," he said.
They recently came up with flat-bottomed ships to carry more cargo over shallow waters in many parts of South East Asia, he said.
