Sarawak focusing on technical education to cater for industries

KUCHING, Dec 14 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government is focusing on technical education to develop semi-skilled and skilled workers to cater for the industrial sector, especially the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said public and private institutions of higher learning in the state should provide more technical courses for locals at diploma and certificate levels.

"With rapid industrial development, including SCORE, we expect 52% of 500,000 jobs created in the next 20 years will be semi-skilled workers, and we need to produce at least 5,000 engineers and technicians a year," he said at the Sarawak Chief Minister Special Award's presentation here Wednesday night.

He said the implementation of the Tenth Malaysia Plan had charted the growth of technical-based industries, including energy industry in Sarawak.

"At first I was not convinced of the ambitious Economic Transformation Programme to turn Sarawak high-income economy by 2030, but after two years I believe the objectives can be achieved," he said.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Foundation chairman Tan Sri Adenan Satem said the foundation would assist the state government in producing between 20,000 and 30,000 skilled workers for Score.
