Sabah to emerge as largest manufacturer of calamansi-based cosmetics

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- Sabah is set to emerge as the largest manufacturer of calamansi and honey extract-based cosmetics in the country, said Sirim Bhd acting president and chief executive Dr Zainal Abidin Mohd Yusof.

He said the move was based on the ready availability of calamansi and honey from plantations owned by the Rural Development Cooperative (KPD).

A memorandum of understanding was signed today between Sirim Bhd and KPD which will facilitate research and development work by Sirim into the manufacture of calamansi and honey extract moisturisers, facial cleansers, body cleansers and lip moisturisers.

Zainal Abidin said besides providing expertise and consultancy service in labelling and packaging, Sirim would also undertake tests to determine if the products complied with guidelines set by the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau and obtain halal certification from the Department of Islamic Development (Jakim).

He said there was huge potential for the cosmetics industry to be developed in Sabah judging from the sale of RM800 million worth of cosmetics in 2005.

"This means there is an enormous potential for our entrepreneurs, including those in Sabah, to engage in the cosmetics industry.
