SME Corp, MDEC Team Up To Promote E-commerce Among SMEs

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) --  SME Corporation Malaysia Bhd (SME CorpMalaysia) has teamed up with Multimedia Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDeC)to increase the adoption of an e-commerce platform, MDEX.com, among local smalland medium enterprises (SMEs).

They are aiming to get 2,000 SMEs within a year to usethe MDEX.Com, which is an independent e-commerce platform that will help tostreamline business processes for SMEs towards better productivity and market.

SME Corp's Chief Executive Officer Datuk Hafsah Hashimsaid e-commerce was a cost-effective and smart way to reach out to potentialcustomers but many SMEs had wrong notions about doing business online. 

"They think that that they must allocate a largeamount of money and need to hire IT staff to manage the e-commerce platform.The move to embrace innovation and technology does not necessarily require hugeinvestments," she said at the signing of a Memorandum of Understandingbetween SME Corp and MDeC on MDEX.com, here Monday. 

She said that more than 92 per cent of local SMEs hadinternet access but only 30 per cent of them used e-commerce system. 

"Through this collaboration with MDeC, we areconfident that it will transform the way in which SME businesses, from allindustries, will be conducted and I urge all SMEs to embrace this newoffering," she said. 

According to Hafsah, efforts in promoting innovation-ledand technology-driven SMEs have been further strengthened in the recentlyannounced 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP). 

A dedicated programme known as 1-InnoCert, which assessesthe innovation level of enterprises will acknowledge professionals, utilisetechnology and innovation for process and product development as well asmarketing. 

She said the government via SME Corp would continue toenhance the skills and capabilities of SME workers at technical, supervisoryand managerial level, particularly in areas such as information technology,industrial design and engineering.

MDeC's Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Badlisham Ghazalisaid the MDEX.com platform, which provides two applications namelye-documentation and online payment, would mainly support the adoption of betterbusiness process, reduction of human error and traceability of transactions.

"With SMEs making up 99 per cent of total businessestablishments in Malaysia, we understand the need to address this community'sneeds," he said, adding that MDeC will be marketing this platform at SMECorp's scheduled events in most locations throughout the country.-- BERNAMA
