Proposal to open running of Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia to public to go to Cabinet

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry will propose to the Cabinet, to open the running of Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) to the public.

Its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the proposal was to provide an opportunity to the public, including sundry-shop operators, to run these shops themselves without the involvement of Mydin as the management.

"The committee has so far agreed with the idea but we will discuss the matter at the Cabinet meeting tomorrow for approval," he said after officially opening the fifth KR1M in Wangsa Maju, here, Thursday.

Ismail Sabri said members of the public who wished to operate the KR1M had the option of selling KR1M products and using their name or run the KR1M as normal.

He said his ministry was studying the terms and conditions to ensure the KR1M policy would not be affected.

"The operators must adhere to the stipulated conditions and I am discussing this with Mydin," he said, adding that public participation in the KR1M would also negate accusations by certain quarters that this business was being monopolised by Mydin.

He said Mydin had earlier been entrusted to manage the KR1M and it opened 20 new branches this year and would open 60 more next year, including in Sabah and Sarawak.
