Parliament: Virtual Mall Project To Be Implemented By End 2012 - Tan Lian Hoe
KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism is expected to introduce a Virtual Mall project under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) to develop online trade by December 2012, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Deputy minister Datuk Tan Lian Hoe said the project would give local small and medium sized industries a platform to conduct their business electronically and market their product globally.
"The long term success of the project can contribute about RM830 million towards the Gross National Income (GNI) of the country and create 6,629 jobs by 2020," said Tan when answering a question by Datuk Dr Mohamad Shahrum Osman (BN-Lipis) who wanted to know the ministry's efforts to increase entrepreneurs involved in electronic commerce.
Tan said that there would be added emphasis and focus on electronic trade or online because it has become a catalyst for growth in the current economic trend.
"Such efforts to encourage online business will certainly assist local entrepreneurs involved in small and medium sized industries to venture and enhance their business," said Tan.
"The Electronic Commerce Act 2006 will also be amended to ensure important details for the transactions of the business are published on the website and consumer protection in e-commerce transactions be specified for easy reference," said Tan.
