PM to launch aid programme for Tanjung Lumpur fishermen, families

KUANTAN, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is scheduled to launch an aid programme for about 5,000 fishermen and their families in Kampung Tanjung Lumpur near here on Saturday, Tanjung Lumpur state assemblyman Datuk Wan Adnan Wan Mamat said Wednesday.

He said the "Ihsan Samudera" programme would provide various kinds of aid to the fishermen and their families.

"The fishermen will receive boat engines, nets, safety jackets and GPS (Global Positioning System) gadgets while their children will receive school uniforms, food baskets and bicycles," he told Bernama.

Wan Adnan said Pahang had more than 7,400 registered fishermen in the districts of Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin, with 70% of them in the Kuantan district.

During the launch of the programme, which is expected to draw 20,000 visitors, some 40 medical specialists from the National Heart Institute, Ampang Puteri Hospital and Sungai Buloh Hospital will provide a medical examination service.

Wan Adnan himself is scheduled to distribute cash vouchers under the 1Malaysia People's Aid to 1,600 people there.
