Mentor-Mentee Programme To Pull Farmers Out Of Poverty

BESUT, Feb 2 (Bernama) -- The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry will introduce a mentor-mentee programme in agriculture ventures in efforts to move farmers out of poverty with the help of agropreneurs.

Its secretary-general, Datuk Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the programme would be in line with the Azam Tani Programme, which aimed at eradicating hardcore poverty nationwide.

He hoped the mentor-mentee programme would be able to change the livelihood of 44,000 hardcore poor farmers through livestock and poultry breeding, vegetable cultivation and aquaculture.

All agricultural agencies will be mobilised to assist farmers to ensure that the mentor-mentee programmes work well, he told reporters after opening the jamnapari goat project by Jasmiza Trading at Kampung Gaung near here Wednesday.

He said the Azam Tani Programme brought 4,700 hardcore poor farmers out of poverty last year, surpassing its target of 3,000 farmers.
