Melaka's first 1Malaysia People's Shop in Tengkera receives good response
MELAKA, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) in Tengkera, the first for Melaka state, opened yesterday, receiving encouraging response from the local residents, especially the low-income earners.
The shop, also the first KR1M outside the Klang Valley, is located at the Al-Ikhsan Flats, a public housing scheme.
It is managed by the Mydin hypermarket chain, with monitoring by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry.
Some of the residents there, who are multiracial, started patronising the shop as early as 8am. Most of them are low-income earners with some receiving monthly financial aid from the Social Welfare Department.
They were keen to buy products bearing the 1Malaysia logo like cooking oil, eggs, flour and sugar from the shop.
For example, a 5kg packet of rice is sold at RM11.50 compared to the normal retail price of RM13, 10kg packet at RM21.99 compared to RM26, a packet of meehoon at only RM1.39, 30 eggs at RM9.29 and a 425gm-can of sardines at RM2.99.
Customer G. Gheeta, 23, said the opening of a KR1M in the area was timely as most of the residents there earned low incomes while the goods offered by the shop were reasonably priced and affordable.
Lai Yee Wah, 72, said although not all the goods at the KR1M were priced low but necessities like cooking oil and rice were reasonably priced.
He said the shop's location was also strategic, thus making it easy for the residents to purchase daily necessities without having to go out to town.
Aidil Karim, 42, said the opening of a KR1M in the area showed that the government and Mydin were concerned with the welfare of the low-income group.
