Malaysia tops sales target at Caexpo 2011
NANNING (China), Oct 27 (Bernama) -- The 128 Malaysian companies at the 8th China-Asean Expo (Caexpo 2011), which ended yesterday, raked in total sales far exceeding the target of RM100 million.
Ong Yew Chee, director of Construction Services and Building Materials Section at the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) and Caexpo 2011 project director, said actual sales amounted to RM24 million and potential sales RM152 million, with 8,332 trade enquiries.
Last year when Malaysia sent a contingent of 101 companies, actual sales was at RM23.10 million, sales under negotiation RM42.60 million with 6,270 trade enquiries.
"Considering the strong representation and support from Malaysian companies this year, we achieved a very good and satisfactory result," Ong said.
"I believe our companies have succeeded in portraying a good image of Malaysia while exhibiting quality products.
"Even China's Prime Minister praised Malaysia's participation this year, as when compared to other Asean countries, they did not have big companies such as those present at the Malaysia Pavilion and those involved in services," he added.
Malaysia was the Country of Honour at the Caexpo 2011 this year.
Among the 128 Malaysian companies participating in the event, 51 were involved in food and beverages, 34 in health and wellness, 12 in professional services and general products, with nine each in lifestyle and environmental services, eight in education, two each in franchise and healthcare as well as one conglomerate.
According to official figures, the amount of trade recorded by all 10 Asean countries and China during the event was US$1.807 billion (about RM5.638 billion) while the total number of visitors was 50,000.
The crowds were much higher not just at the Malaysia Pavilion but also in the other similarly large pavilions like Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand.
Ong said the Malaysian company with the highest sales was Syngas Sdn Bhd which registered RM11 million in actual and RM11.6 million in potential sales.
"The company's technology was very good as it can change plastic waste to diesel fuel. This technology is not as yet available in China.
"A technology company such as this makes us proud as it is our own technology," he added.
In second place was Sime Darby Bhd which has been involved in many projects in China, while bird's nest producer, EBN Industries Sdn Bhd was third.
Ong said 16 bird's nest traders took part in Caexpo 2011 and most of them received good response in terms of sales.
"Actually, sales, was not the main aim of these bird's nest dealers. A number among them, came to educate consumers as at present we are facing some doubts over the quality of the bird's nest available in the market.
"So, they came over to enhance the trust among users in China by providing the right information as to the industry," he added.
He said some Malaysian companies had also involved their importers and distributors in giving consumers the opportunity to try their products.
