Malaysia Can Play Pivotal Role In Producing Halal Ingredients, Says Mukhriz

SHAH ALAM, August 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysian companies can play a pivotal role in producing clean, pure and halal ingredients to cater to the needs of halal food product sectors worldwide, Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir said.

Mukhriz said the country's logistics value chain for the halal industry could be strengthened with the production of halal ingredients in every state.

South Thailand, where Muslims are a minority, has increased its halal food production (following the implementation of Asean Free Trade Area) and is in dire need of raw materials such as halal ingredients, he said.

"South Thailand is one of the major halal food producers and there is a need by these industries to obtain halal ingredients," Mukhriz told reporters after closing a workshop on development of the freight logistic roadmap in Malaysia at Shah Alam Convention Centre near here.

"As such, Malaysia can perhaps look in this sector (producing halal ingredients) to the country as it has strong credentials in the Islamic world," he said.

The two-day conference, which ended today, was jointly organised by the Malaysian Logistics Council (MLC), Malaysian Industrial Development Authority and the Malaysia Institute of Transport based at Universiti Teknologi Mara.

Earlier in his speech, Mukhriz said that freight logistics is a vital component for most of the industries as efficient freight logistics could promote seamless supply chain and boost the country's competitive edge.

He said the MLC should be nurtured as a "peak national body" and empowered to monitor the strategic development of the local freight logistics industry.

Mukhriz also praised the Malaysian team for coming up with a report entitled "The Roadmap for the Development of the Freight Logistics Services Sector (incorporating the impact of the Global Economic Downturn on the Freight Logistics Industry)".
