Hypermarkets Yet To Achieve 30 Per Cent Target On SMI Products, says Ismail Sabri

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Most supermarkets and hypermarkets in the country offer approximately eight per cent of the small and medium industry (SMI) products at their premises -- a far cry from the 30 per cent target.

Dissatisfied with the percentage, Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob called on supermarket and hypermarket operators to be more active in marketing SMI products.

"Supermarket and hypermarket operators should place more SMI products on the shelves because the quality of these products has improved and they have also penetrated the foreign market.

"We do not want to hear anymore excuses from these operators that the local products are of low quality because their commitment in achieving the target is very much needed."

He said this after opening the business-networking programme between the SMI and local and foreign supermarkets and hypermarkets at the Mid Valley Shopping Mall here on Friday.

Ismail Sabri said the exhibition was aimed at bringing SMI entrepreneurs closer to local and foreign hypermarket operators in the country so that the latter could evaluate the potential of the SMI products.

"The government hopes the programme could change the perception of hypermarket operators to see that locally-produced goods are at par with imported goods.

"The programme is a continuous programme where SMI entrepreneurs, hypermarket operators, as well as local and foreign businessmen, are welcome to seek help or counseling and business networking aid from the ministry at any time," he said.

A total of 102 SMI companies are taking part in the three-day programme.
