Help For SMIs In Facing Worsening Economic Crisis

KUANTAN, April 22 (Bernama) -- The Pahang government will continue to assist small and medium industries (SMIs) in facing the economic crisis which appears to be worsening.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said efforts would be made to help the SMIs improve the quality of their products and find markets so that they could prevail in this very challenging time. He said the assistance would also be in the from of loans and grants from various government agencies like Mara and Tekun Nasional.

Replying to a question from Abd Aziz Mat Kiram (BN-Batu Talam) at the state assembly sitting today, Adnan added that there was still good demand for Malaysia's SMI products, especially from Muslim countries, as Malaysia was well-known for its halal products.

To a question from Datuk Dr Ng Keong Chye (BN-Ketari) on the closure of factories and retrenchment of workers in the Bentong Industrial area as a result of the economic crisis, Adnan said so far two plants were forced to stop operating or to reduce manpower.

He said Maltaitech Corporation Sdn Bhd, a Japanese company, closed its operations on July 31, 2008 and retrenched all its 200 workers, while Rubberflex Corporation Sdn Bhd, set up with German investment and which produced vulcanised rubber thread, retrenched 27 of its 686 workers due to falling demand for their products. The retrenched workers were all paid compensation. -- BERNAMA
