Grant Helps Agro-based Entrepreneurs To Raise Income

MIRI, April 5 (Bernama) -- Sixteen agro-based entrepreneurs here received grants under the programme to match packaging, labelling and branding of agro-based products implemented by the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry.

The grant, worth RM92,000, was presented by the minister concerned, Datuk Seri Noh Omar. It is part of the overall grant totalling RM3 million launched last year to assist 313 selected entrepreneurs throughout the country to expand the market for their products.

Noh said that through the assistance it was hoped that the small entrepreneurs who were previously earning less than RM100,000 annually could raise their income to RM1 million annually.

"Previously, the ministry's (Agriculture Ministry's) scope was only limited to the agricultural sector, but under the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry now, the government strives to expand the agricultural sector to produce quality end products," he said in his speech at the ceremony to present the grant.

He said under the programme, the government helped to fund 80 per cent of the development cost for packaging, labelling and branding for the entrepreneurs' products while the remaining 20 per cent would be borne by the entrepreneurs themselves.

In addition, the programme also helped the entrepreneurs in terms of training, development and product promotion, he added.
