Good Prospects For Tropical Fruits In China
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- The prospects for tropical fruits from Malaysia are extremely good in China, said president of Malaysian Fruits Farmers Association, Hong Jun Hong.
Hong said the farmers should be prepared to grow more fruits as China would allow more of them to enter its market soon.
"The association, together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry and Shanghai Municipal Agriculture Commission (SMAC), are in talks to bring more local fruits to the province," he told a media briefing on exports of Malaysian fruits to China here Wednesday.
Currently, China allowed watermelon, papaya, longan, mangosteen and rambutan into its market, he said.
"The fruit farmers will stand to benefit greatly once things progress smoothly within the framework set by the Chinese government," he said.
Meanwhile, Asia Shangtex Sdn Bhd, the concessionaire to supply agriculture products from Asean to the Shanghai-Xijiao International Agricultural Products Trade Centre, would help Malaysian farmers and companies tap the market in China and eliminate the risks in exporting their fruits to the province.
Its chief executive officer, Chee Kok Wing, said the company would help them prepare the documents required by the SMAC so that their products could reach the Shanghai market on schedule and not being cheated by the middlemen.
"The farmers face difficulties exporting their fruits to the province due to documentation problems and some of them are not receiving payments," he said.
