Furniture Players Need To Be More Creative And Innovative In Their Designs, Says Koh

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 (Bernama) -- Local furniture players need to be more creative and innovative in terms of their designs to remain competitive on the global market.

In making the call, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said local funiture exports, had recorded remarkable achievements over the past 20 years with exports rising to more than RM7.6 billion in 2009 from RM370 million in 1990.

He also praised the efforts of the organiser of the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) to introduce the Ideation Award to nurture young talent to come up with innovative and creative furniture designs.

"Innovative and creative furniture designs will benefit the industry," he said at the opening of the MIFF 2011 here today.

Koh also encouraged Malaysian furniture players to aggresively promote their products on the international market and explore new ones, especially those where pricing is not a key factor, with consumers willing to pay for high value products.

He also believed with the combined efforts within the industry, local furniture exports will continue to grow going forward.

The five-day MIFF 2011 is a trade exhibition showcasing furniture for the export market.

About 7,000 international buyers are expected to visit the MIFF 2011 which has attracted 500 exhibitors from among local and regional furniture players.
