First ABM Banking Industry Seminar for SMEs opens in Klang Valley

The Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) initiated a one-day seminar for SMEs on July 9, 2008. The seminar was opened by the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, YBhg Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz.

More than 300 SME participants attended the seminar, which was aimed at enhancing SME awareness and access to their business financing needs, as well as to explore financial opportunities via participating ABM member banks.

In his welcoming speech, the Chairman of ABM, YBhg Dato’ Sri Abdul Hamidy Abdul Hafiz said that in an increasingly challenging operating environment, banks have been responsive and have become more sensitive to the needs of their customers, particularly SMEs.

He pointed that the promotion of the SME sector is essential for the nation’s economic well being, as it contributes about 32 percent to the national GDP.

SMEs are also known to stimulate private ownership and entrepreneurial skills while acting as incubators for developing domestic enterprises in countries.

The second component of the seminar was a “Meet the Banks Session”, where SMEs were able to meet participating banks for advice on their financial queries.
