Financial Institutions Need To Re-Examine Role In Promoting SMEs

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Bernama) -- Financial institutionsneed to continuously re-examine their role in promoting small and mediumenterprises (SMEs), according to the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM).

"We need to continually re-examine our roles asfinancial institutions to better support the SMEs, from the APEC (Asia PacificEconomic Cooperation) perspective, for global competition. 2010 is aparticularly important landmark year," said ABM chairman Datuk Seri AbdulWahid Omar.

He said this in a statement in conjunction with theSeventh Annual Meeting APEC Financial Institutions Dealing with SMEs 2010 hereThursday.

 For the first time, Malaysia, a signatory member economyof the APEC, and member economies are coming together at a meeting hosted byABM to review their cooperation in the previous year.

Plans for the continued promotion of financial andtechnical cooperation among member financial institutions that deal with SMEs,were also discussed, Abdul Wahid said.

 Entitled "SME Development and Financing at theThreshold of the Next Decade -- Review, Re-strategise, Revamp", themeeting is relevant and timely as it underpins the APEC 2010 theme of "Change and Action" tofacilitate trade and investment as well as strengthen ties among the economiesin the Asia-Pacific region, he said.

The annual meetings are held prior to the APEC FinanceMinisters Meeting of the Economies. 

The conference in conjunction with the annual meetingscheduled tomorrow has attracted nearly 200 participants. — Bernama
