Farmers' Markets In Terengganu Generate Lucrative Income

KUALA TERENGGANU, June 4 (Bernama) -- The FederalAgricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) state office in Terengganu hassucceeded in generating an annual return of RM16.2 million from the seven farmers'markets operating in the state throughout last year.

According to FAMA State Director for Terengganu, HassanJusoh, the farmers' markets are located two each in the districts of KualaTerengganu and Hulu Terengganu, with one each in Kemaman, Bukit Payong inMarang, and Besut.

"FAMAplans to start two more farmers' markets in Besut and one each in Dungun andAjil, in addition to the two that were recently started in Bukit Kenak andKuala Ping, in Hulu Terengganu," Hassan said at the launch of thethree-day Terengganu Agropreneur Expo here Friday.

Chairman ofthe Council for Agricultural Development in the Parliamentary District of KualaTerengganu, Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh officiated the the three-day expowhich was sponsored by FAMA.

From theencouraging response received from the locals, coupled with the additionalfarmers' markets, FAMA is targeting this year's farmers' market operations togenerate a return of RM18 million, Hassan added.

"Thepeople in these areas prefer to buy at the farmers' markets because in additionto the freshness of the produce, prices are also cheaper due to the absence ofmiddlemen," he said.

Some 112small and medium sized enterprises are showcasing their products at the expo.-- BERNAMA
