DPMM : 700 Malay Water Contractors Could Lose Income Source

KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Bernama) -- More than 700 Malay water contractor companies from Selangor could lose their source of income while more than 30,000 workers stand to lose their jobs with the freeze on Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas)'s phase 3 project.

Making its appeal against this, the Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) in a statement here today called for an immediate revival of the projects under the third phase.

The Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water yesterday announced that the deferment of the old water pipe and communication line replacement projects worth RM2.6 billion referred to the Capital Expenditure Work Programme or Work Programme.

"The DPMM views this matter seriously as this will not only invite social problems with the loss of opportunity to make money in a halal way, and in fact the country's economic growth will be jeopardised as the entrepreneurs, whether small sized, mid-sized or the larger ones, are all contributors to the country's economic growth," he said.

DPMM also appealed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to help the genuine contractors who have been identified in the sector so that they can continue with their projects. -- BERNAMA
