Country's Economy In Right Platform Due To Stimulus Packages

ALOR SETAR, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- The country's economy is steady and in the right platform resulting from the economic stimulus packages worth RM67 billion implemented by the government, said Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

He said the strategy had laid a strong foundation for the country's economy to progress even more further in the future.

"Our country was actually at a crossroad and was going to get caught in a group of countries with average income or choose to propel itself into a high income country. We should be grateful as the strategy and stimulus packages have successfully brought out the country from the downturn," he said in his speech at the launch of an economic convention here Monday.

His speech text was read by his deputy, Datuk Hassan Malek. The convention, organised by the Federation of Malay Economic Bodies (GABEM) with the cooperation of SME Corporation and Umno Kedah Communications Unit, was also attended by GABEM Melaysia Chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik.

Mohd Shafie said the bold steps taken by the BN government to make Malaysia brave in making changes and coming with new ways to counter the economic challenges had brought forth the results with the country projecting a growth of three to five per cent this year.

On Kedah, Mohd Shafie, who is also the chairman of Umno Kedah communications unit, said that many of the projects implemented in Kedah came through the federal government as the state government had not carried out any projects with the capacity to raise its economy. -- BERNAMA
