Conduct More Research On SME Products, IPT Urged

PENANG, March 22 (Bernama) -- Institutions of higher learning (IPT) have been urged to conduct more research on small medium scale enterprise (SME) products for export market.

Research like extending the shelf-life of snacks such as tapioca chips was crucial to enable more food products to be exported, said Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (Fama) agro-based industry senior director Mansor Omar.

He said there were high demand for Malaysian food products like 'bahulu', but their market was restricted due to short shelf-life. So far, Fama and IPT researchers are conducting 12 studies on food products and more studies should be commissioned for the benefit of the SME, he said when opening the second SME and Marketing Conference at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here Monday.

The conference entitled "SME Challenges and Practices in Malaysia", which is jointly organised by the USM Business Studies Centre and Fama, is aimed at enhancing the agro-based industry marketing system as well as product quality and innovation. -- BERNAMA
