Chinese Small Businessmen Can Now Apply For Tekun Loans

SIBU, May 6 (Bernama) -- Chinese small businessmen cannow apply for loans under a special fund made available through theEntrepreneur Economic Fund (Tekun).

Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Datuk SeriNoh Omar said although it was first meant to assist bumiputera businessmen, thegovernment had decided to extend the facility to the Chinese and Indiancommunities.

"Ten Chinese traders in Hulu Selangor were given thefacility recently and today three in Sibu are benefiting from it," he saidafter launching a Tekun entrepreneurship seminar and the state's first Tekunentrepreneurs community club here Thursday.

Noh said this was in line with the 1Malaysia concept ofPrime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

"We have since 2008 provided RM35 million loans tothe Indians and for a start, RM1.5 million will be provided for Chinesetraders."

The minister reminded the people that besides Tekun,there were eight other agencies that they could turn to for micro loans.

Earlier, Tekun Nasional chief executive officer DatukAbdul Rahim Hassan said it had given out loans totalling RM1.5 billion to205,278 borrowers nationwide from 1999 to March this year.

Sarawak which had 12,542 borrowers with loans totallingRM56.7million had the best repayment record after Kelantan.--BERNAMA
